It's important to format a message that's easy to read, conveys the idea, and is quick to understand when sending it out to residents. In this article, we'll highlight resources for you to reference while creating an  Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) alert and emergency communication. 

 

IPAWS

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has a resource referencing effective messaging with limited characters, an incident template, a decision tree, as well as example procedures and guidelines. 

 

Alert Notification

CivicPlus has compiled recommendations for sending messages to residents. While some tips are geared towards email, others can be applied to alerts such as subject lines, optimal sending windows, ensuring Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) best practices are observed, and more.
